4 January - National Spaghetti Day in USA
Spaghetti gets its name from its shape. Spaghetti comes from the word Spago, which translates in English to “string,” or “twine.” Spaghetti is not to be confused with spaghettoni or spaghettini. Spaghetti was invented a thousand years ago.
Spaghetti is the simplest pasta shape to produce on an industrial scale. Spaghetti used to be much longer. It tastes good and it's filling. It also has a long shelf life, so you can keep it in the larder until you need to put a meal together. But that's only part of its success. Pasta is also relatively easy to mass produce and transport around the world, making it a popular product with food companies as well.
In Italy, spaghetti (like all pasta) are generally cooked just to al dente (which means “to the tooth.”) to create a slightly chewy texture, rather than an overly soft consistency.
