Red Nose Day in the UK is a fundraising event organized by Comic Relief, an English charity, Laughing Out Loud, founded in 1985 by comedy writer Richard Curtis to help people suffering from famine in Ethiopia.
The first Red Nose Day event raised a whopping 15 million pounds. In 2009 the event raised 82 million pounds. In 2011 Red Nose Day raised 108 million pounds. In total since its beginning the Comic Relief charity has raised more than 600 million pounds.
Around 72% of the population of the UK took part in Red Nose Day 1993. 10 years on from the launch, 1995, being the 5th Red Nose Day, carried a theme of “What a difference a day makes”, with the aim to see how much could be raised in only one day, and as a result $28 million (£22 million) was raised.
