21 January - National Granola Bar Day and National New England Clam Chowder Day in USA
Granola was invented in Dansville, New York, by Dr. James Caleb Jackson at the Jackson Sanitarium in 1863. James Caleb Jackson crumbled graham flour and baked it, calling it Jackson's granula. Soon after, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, of Kellogg's cereal fame, made a mixture called granula, comprised of oatmeal, wheat flour and cornmeal. After Jackson sued, the name of Kellogg's mixture was changed to granola.
New England clam chowder is a milk- or cream-based chowder, commonly made with potatoes, onion, and clams. Including tomatoes is shunned; a 1939 bill making tomatoes in clam chowder illegal was introduced in the Maine legislature.
According to Savoring Gotham: A Food Lovers Companion to New York City, it is believed that the New England style of chowder was introduced to the region by French, Nova Scotian, or British settlers and became a common dish in the area by the 1700s.
