Sodium is key in the operation of all signals within the cells, as well as to and from, the brain. Our body needs about 100 grams of salt for every 40 kilos of weight. Sweat contains between 2.25 and 3.4 grams of salt per liter. Sea turtles cry to get rid of salt excess in their body.
Salt has become a key component of diets worldwide. Most people consume salt through processed foods and/or adding it to meals during the cooking process. Whilst a small amount of salt is necessary for our health, too much of it – i.e., more than 5 grams a day according to the World Health Organization (WHO) – can lead to an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
The reduction of salt/sodium consumption is one of the most cost-effective interventions to prevent hypertension and CVDs. PAHO/WHO joins the global community effort sharing technical tools to develop and implement comprehensive policies for salt reduction and key messages to promote healthy practices at home, schools and workplaces.
