Father’s Day is an annual worldwide celebration of the contribution made by fathers and father figures in the lives of their children. The first ever Father’s Day was celebrated on 19th June, 1910. It was originally invented by an American who wanted to celebrate her Father. Uruguay has a Father’s Day skeleton tradition: In Uruguay, fathers are honoured by hanging skeletons outside their doors as this represents Padre Esqueleto, or “Father Skeleton”, in folklore. Some families take advantage of this day to remember those parents who have already passed away and hold commemorative masses.
The customs in Uruguay are very varied and have a high commercial component. Stores and malls offer their best promotions because they expect large numbers of visitors. In addition, the week before Father's Day coincides with the beginning of the "winter holidays", offering a good opportunity to prepare gifts.
