Norway's King Harald was a second cousin of Queen Elizabeth, and was her closest royal relative to sit on another European throne. Harald V (born 21 February 1937) is King of Norway. He acceded to the throne on 17 January 1991. Following the death of his grandfather Haakon VII in 1957, Harald became crown prince as his father became king.
An avid sailor, Harald represented Norway in the yachting events of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 1964, Mexico City in 1968, and Munich in 1972. The Crown Prince carried the Norwegian flag at the opening parade of the 1964 Summer Olympics. Harald is an honorary president of the International Soling Association.
