Unlike popular belief, Shivaji was not named after Lord Shiva, but after Goddess Shivai. His mother was blessed with Shivaji after she prayed to the Goddess for a son. Shivaji who was a secular ruler had many Muslim soldiers in his army. His sole aim was to overthrow Mughal empire and establish Maratha rule in the state. He was called the ‘Father of Indian Navy’ for his strategic plan to protect the coastline from other rulers. He established the navy, which no other Indian ruler ever did.
The birth anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj is celebrated on two different dates. Of them, one is based on the English calendar and another is based on the Marathi calendar. Earlier, the Shiv Jayanti used to be celebrated as per the Marathi calendar.
