National Celiac Awareness Day
National Celiac Awareness Day is held on September 13. The United States Senate has once again designated September 13th as "National Celiac Awareness Day." According to the resolution, the Senate "recognizes that all people of the United States should become more informed and aware of celiac disease" and encourages all Americans to participate in activities that celebrate this day. Celiac disease affects an estimated 3 million Americans, 85% of whom remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. This event in the second decade of the month September is annual.

September 13 has been dubbed “National Celiac Disease Awareness Day” in honor of the doctor who identified a link between celiac disease and diet. Dr. Samuel Gee, a leader in celiac disease research, was born on Sept. 13, 1839.
Coeliac disease may have an ancient history dating back to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The first clear description was given by Samuel Gee in 1888. He suggested that dietary treatment might be of benefit.
