Tag des Deutschen Bieres - 1994, Deutscher Brauer-Bund.
Hamburg is a great place to celebrate Beer Day - in a beer garden, brewery or at a beer tasting! Every year on April 23, Germany celebrates Beer Day, because on April 23, 1516, the German Purity Law was proclaimed. Since then, German beer may contain nothing but hops, malt, yeast and water.
The Purity Law is considered to be one of the traditions of German history. On April 23, 1516, the Bavarian duchy first mentions which ingredients are allowed in German beer. Initially, it is known only in Bavaria under the term "Bavarian Purity Law". Literally, the purity law of Duke Wilhelm IV states:
"(...) In particular, we want that henceforth in all our cities, markets and in the countryside to no more pieces than only barley, hops and water are used and should be used. (....)"
The basic text was continuously updated in more recent laws and extended to other German regions.
