6 March - Alamo Day in Mexico
Alamo Day is held on the anniversary of the last day of the Battle of the Alamo. The Alamo, originally known as Mission San Antonio de Valero, was built by Spanish settlers around 1718 near what is now San Antonio. It housed Native American missionaries and converts until 1793, when the Spanish missions were secularized.
The approximately 200 Texans dug in and held on for 13 days. Ultimately, they could not hold off Santa Anna and his troops, who numbered 1,800 (some reports say as many as 6,000), and the Mexicans breached the outer wall of the courtyard on March 6. Almost all of the Texans were wounded. The Mexican forces also suffered heavy losses, losing between 600 and 1,600 men.
