January 13th is commemorated in Lithuania as the Day of the Defenders of Freedom, honouring those who died on 13 January 1991 during the Soviet army's rampage in Vilnius. More than 14 people were killed and more than a thousand injured when Soviet troops and special forces occupied the television tower and the Lithuanian Radio and Television building. Although the military succeeded in taking the TV tower and the Lithuanian Radio and Television building, they did not dare to attack the building of the then Supreme Soviet - the Restoration Seimas, which was protected by thousands of people.
Over 600 peaceful and unarmed people were wounded and 14 were killed at the TV Tower in Vilnius. The TV tower was occupied, but the military abandoned its plans to attack the Parliament.
Although the capture of some objects was successful, the final objectives of the operation (to seize the Parliament, to provoke discord between Lithuanian citizens of different nationalities, to present the events as a struggle between two armed sides) were not achieved, and the Soviet Army had to retreat from the captured objects quite quickly.
