Festivus
Festivus is held on December 23. A holiday made popular by the sitcom Seinfeld, as an alternative to the pressures and commercialism of the Christmas season. This event in the third decade of the month December is annual. Help us
The idea of Festivus originally came to Seinfeld writer Dan O'Keefe from a tradition started by his father Daniel O'Keefe. Daniel O'Keefe Sr. originally invented Festivus as a way to have a holiday that was secular and not burdened by the religious and commercialism of the holiday season.
As Dan O'Keefe told, Festivus was originally meant to be an alternative to other holidays that were over-commercialized or just “some dead guy's birthday.” In fact, it began as a celebration of O'Keefe's parents' first date.
Thus “a Festivus for the rest of us” was born — though the holiday was really created by “Seinfeld” writer Dan O'Keefe's father, Dan Sr., in the 1960s and later re-purposed for the series, for which he can thank his brother, Mark.
