12 December - Japan Kanji Day
Kanji originated from Chinese in the 5th century. Kanji is one of three parts of the Japanese alphabet. The modern Japanese language uses Hiragana and Kanji. Some Kanji represent more than one sound.
In Japanese, there are no spaces between words, so kanji helps break words apart, making it easy to read. As I'm sure you can imagine, long sentences would get even more difficult to read, and when you don't know where one word begins and another one ends, reading errors can occur.
Kanji are used for writing nouns, adjectives, adverbs and verbs. But unlike the Chinese language, Japanese cannot be written entirely in kanji. For grammatical endings and words without corresponding kanji, two additional, syllable-based scripts are being used, hiragana and katakana, each consisting of 46 syllables.
