Father's Day is a celebration that honours the role of fathers and forefathers.
King Bhumibol, wielded little real political power, although the constitution named him as head of state and commander of the armed forces. His most important function was to serve as a living symbol of and a focus of unity for the Thai nation. As monarch, Bhumibol enjoyed immense popularity. King Bhumibol's birthday has been honored in the past by festivals and candlelit events.
The day commemorates the birthday of the late King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej. It is also Thailand's National Day and is the day when Father's Day is celebrated in Thailand.
On National Father's Day, Thais honor their fathers and grandfathers by presenting them with a canna flower, which resembles a lily and is called 'dok phuttha raksa' in Thai.
