2 February - Our Lady of Navigators in Brazil
The history of the village of Navegantes is linked to Catholicism and devotion to Our Lady of Navigators. The navigators lived here, whether they were from out to sea (seafarers) or from inland sea (fishermen). The devotion to Our Lady of the Navigators appeared long before the construction of the chapel itself, for the fishermen Our Lady of the Navigators was like a relief amidst the bad weather of the sea.
The construction of the first chapel began in March 1897 and its inauguration date is February 2, 1898. The church was the center of the village's formation and remains to this day as the town's focal point. The image of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes was received by the residents with the greatest festivities on September 8, 1899, and it is reported that this celebration was repeated annually. However, because it was a rainy and cold season, the faithful thought it best to transfer the celebrations to February 2nd, the date on which the feast of Our Lady of Navigators is officially celebrated. On this same date the devotion to Our Lady of Lampadário is celebrated.
However, it is stated in the Registration Dossier of the Feast of Our Lady of the Navigators (2017, p.28) that: "According to reports, the feast initially took place in the month of September, October or December, annually and had its first activity in 1899. However, due to the enormous amount of rain in these months, the date for the feast was rescheduled, in 1905, to February 2nd, a day that was a holiday in the city of Itajaí. After the Second Vatican Council the feast was transferred to the Sunday closest to February 2nd. The ancients said it was a special day, and everyone had great respect for the moment. It was believed that unusual things could happen like fires, shipwrecks, tragedies, so everyone was careful not to do anything wrong or commit exaggerations."
The festival moved the village and during the days leading up to the festivities for many years the residents organized themselves and decorated the main street, leaving the street for a length of 1 km all flagged with white painted stems and bamboo arches. It is worth mentioning that during this period Navegantes was still a district of Itajaí, as well as the neighboring towns of Luiz Alves and Penha, and all the towns stopped for the festivities.
Everyone prepared themselves all year round for the feast of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes. The clothes for the party were more important than the clothes for the end of the year celebrations, in the festive mass it was essential to wear new clothes and be well dressed.
The party always had the toys and games of its time, the stalls that sold saints, images, rings and everything that the merchants could bring for sale, the food of the parties were and still are organized by the church and its pastorals. The bands that animated the parties were Os Foliões from Itajaí and the band Amor à Arte from Florianópolis, among others. All the popular people would always sit by the side of the church on wooden benches and the bands would play all day long to animate the party.
The procession is one of the most important aspects of the party because there is a procession by land and by sea. Both left the church because not all the people could fit on the boats, and when the river procession reached land again, they both met and went on for another short land journey.
