Every year since 2008, November 11 is celebrated as the National Education Day to mark the birth anniversary of India's first Education Minister Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin. Fondly known as Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, he served as the education minister of independent India from 1947 to 1958.
He also contributed to the establishment of educational institutes like Jamia Millia Islamia and IIT Kharagpur.
Several leaders have remembered the contribution of Azad in building the foundation of a strong education system in the country.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development announced on 11 September 2008, "The Ministry has decided to commemorate the birthday of this great son of India by recalling his contribution to the cause of education in India."
