Not Every Country Celebrates Black History Month in February. Every year in February, we honor Black History Month. When it was first founded, Black History Month was only a week and was called Negro History Week. In the ’60s, various colleges and universities expanded the recognition of African American history to the full month of February.
History states that February wasn’t just randomly chosen for Black History Month. Back when it was Negro History Week, the second week of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. From the hidden figures that made an impact, essential Black inventors, change-making civil rights leaders, award-winning authors, and show-stopping 21st century women, Black history is rich in America.
