"Mischief Night" — also known as "Devil's Night" and "Cabbage Night" — is celebrated the night before Halloween. As the name contends, it usually involves some kind of mischief, usually in the form of pranks like egging or toilet-papering someone's house, or rubbing soap on their windows.
In northern New Jersey and the Philadelphia region, October 30 is referred to as "Mischief Night," where mischievous teens soap car windows, egg houses, adorn trees with toilet paper, and run away after ringing doorbells.
The roots of Mischief Night can be traced all the way back to the late 18th century in Great Britain. The earliest reference to Mischief Night is from 1790 when a headmaster encouraged a school play which ended in "an Ode to Fun which praises children's tricks on Mischief Night in most approving terms".
Mischief Night was marked throughout the years but since the 1950s, it has started to wane in popularity. Now it is only really popular in the north of England, where it is also known as Chievous Night, Micky Night or even Mizzy Night in Liverpool. But not just in the UK, the event is also popular across the pond too.
