Teacher's Day in Chile is a holiday that commemorates the work of teachers in elementary and secondary education. It is celebrated on October 16, which coincides with the date of the creation of the Chilean Teachers' College (CPC) in 1974.
It was originally established in 1943, as Teacher's Day, to be celebrated on June 14; shortly thereafter, the date was replaced by September 11, in memory of the death of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, which occurred on that day in 1888; in 1967, Law No. 16,662 ratified this date. In 1974, decree law 680 of 1974 moved the date again, now to December 10, in honor of Gabriela Mistral receiving the Nobel Prize on the same day in 1945; finally, in 1977, decree law 1.938 moved and renamed this date to its current date and name, in memory of the creation of the Chilean Teachers' College.
