The first artificial drinking straw for cocktails has been invented by Marvin Chester Stone, paper cigarette mouthpieces factory owner. He was annoyed with the husk from natural rye straw in his drinks , so he took a piece of paper, wrapped it around a pencil to create a tube, removed the pencil, and then glued the tube together. On 3 January, 1888, Stone patented his genius invention in Washington.
