Throughout the years, Ecuador has had 8 flags, before establishing the definitive one with the tricolor yellow, blue and red; with a shield in the middle. Each color has a meaning, for example, yellow symbolizes gold, wealth and natural resources that Ecuador possesses. Blue represents the ocean and the Ecuadorian sky. Finally, red symbolizes the blood that was shed by our heroes in the liberation struggles.
The national flag, until having a definitive composition, underwent many changes in the historical development of Ecuador. The transformations of the patriotic symbol are registered from the glorious struggle of August 10, 1809 to the present, passing through the memory of the glorious epic of May 24, 1822.
On September 26, 1860, Dr. Gabriel García Moreno, in his capacity as President of Ecuador, ordered the adoption of the Great Colombian colors in the national flag, which a year later was ratified by the National Convention and later, in 1955, the National Congress issued a decree declaring September 26 as the National Flag Day.
