Harkis, who served as auxiliaries to the French army during the Algerian War between 1954 and 1962, fought against the National Liberation Front (FLN) under the command of French officers. While a National Day of Homage to the Harkis is organized every year on September 25, these men and their families are still waiting for signs of recognition from the French government.
A national day of homage to the harkis and other members of the suppletive formations is instituted in recognition of the sacrifices they made as a result of their commitment to the service of France during the Algerian war.
