Azerbaijan is one of the birthplaces of the oil industry. The petroleum industry in Azerbaijan produces about 873,260 barrels (138,837 m3) of oil per day and 29 billion cubic meters of gas per year as of 2013. The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (known as SOCAR) is fully state-owned national oil and gas company headquartered in Baku, Azerbaijan.
On 7 November 1949, the first oil gusher was achieved in Baku, on Oil Rocks, and offshore oil production began for the first time in the world, which was an important event in the development of the oil industry. It is thanks to the selfless work of Azerbaijani oil workers that the idea of the possibility of offshore oil production was realized, ushering an era of offshore development of fields.
On September 20 Azerbaijan celebrates the Oil Workers Day, which marks the anniversary of the signing of the ACG production sharing agreement. The contract, also known as the Contract of the Century due to its tremendous importance, became the first offshore PSA agreement of the country. It covered the development of three major oil fields in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.
