Dr Poorwo Soedarmo (1904 in Malang, East Java, Indonesia – 13 March 2003) was a nutritionist. He is regarded as the "Father of Nutrition" ("Bapak gizi") in Indonesia.
Every January 25 is celebrated as National Nutrition Day. The commemoration was held to improve the nutritional status as well as the health status of the Indonesian people, especially after the independence war.
Prof. Poorwo Soedarmo is the father of Indonesia's National Nutrition, who pioneered it since 1950. He was appointed by former Minister of Health Dr. J. Leimena as Head of the People's Food Institute, or formerly known as Instituut Voor Volksvoeding.
He was appointed as the first professor of nutrition at the University of Indonesia in 1958. It was also in that year that FKUI opened a Nutrition Science department. The department succeeded in producing thousands of nutritionists in Indonesia.
Many scientific works were spawned by the founder of the Nutrition Academy. One of them is Home Economics which is currently known as Family Welfare Science. He also initiated the concept of four healthy, five perfect to fulfill balanced nutrition.
