Renaissance Day in the Dominican Republic marks the start of the Dominican War, which led to the country's independence in 1863. On August 16, 1863, a rebel group led by Santiago Rodriguez and Gregorio Luperon raised the national flag on Capotillo Hill in Santo Domingo.
After former President Pedro Santana merged the Dominican Republic with Spain and made the country a Spanish province, the war was aimed at liberating Caribbean countries from the former Spanish empire.
August 16 is a day of commemoration of the beginning of the War and of remembrance of all the people who fought the conflict and lost their lives in the event.
