The nation is to observe the National Mourning Day today marking the death anniversary of the country's founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who also led the independence movement for East Pakistan (Bangladesh) against West Pakistan. Sheikh Mujib was assassinated along with all but two of his family members on August 15, 1975 at his Dhanmandi residence in Dhaka by a group of army personnel.
He was born into a Bengali Muslim family as the third child in a family of four daughters and two sons. His parents used to adoringly call him "Khoka". In 1929, Mujib entered into class three at Gopalganj Public School, and two years later, class four at Madaripur Islamia High School.
Mujib, the son of a middle-class landowner, studied law and political science at the Universities of Calcutta and Dacca (now Dhaka). Although jailed briefly as a teenager for agitating for Indian independence, he began his formal political career in 1949 as a cofounder of the Awami League.
