Menorca or Minorca is one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea belonging to Spain. Its name derives from its size, contrasting it with nearby Mallorca. Menorca was declared a Unesco Biosphere Reserve in 1993 due to its amazing diversity of flora and fauna, and landscape that ranges from beaches and valleys, to caves, wetlands, and sand dunes.
Despite the fact that the Balearic island of Menorca is not a nation, January 17 is celebrated as its National Day. The date marks the invasion of Menorca by King Alfonso III of Aragon on January 17, 1287.
As in most countries, winter in Menorca does bring with it its fair share of rain. This keeps the island green and fertile, as well as sustaining its plant and animal life. If you do find yourself with a rainy day, head to Mahon or Ciutadella to enjoy the local food, or relax with some retail therapy. Menorca has 121 miles of beaches which is more than Mallorca and Ibiza combined.
