Most of the South Caucasus had been absorbed by the Russian Empire in the first half of the nineteenth century. With the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, the Caucasus became a major theatre, the Russian and Ottoman Empires fighting each other in the region. The 1917 February Revolution saw the demise of the Russian Empire and the establishment of a provisional government in Russia. The Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic (TDFR; 22 April – 28 May 1918) was a short-lived state in the Caucasus that included most of the territory of the present-day Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, as well as parts of Russia and Turkey.
