26 May - Guyana Independence Day
Today is Independence Day in Guyana, marking their independence from Britain on May 26, 1966. Arthur Raymond Chung OE (10 January 1918 – 23 June 2008) was the 1st President of Guyana from 1970 to 1980. He was the first ethnic Chinese (Hakka Han) head of state in a non-Asian country.
A hidden gem in a predominantly Spanish-speaking continent, Guyana embodies centuries of several cultures that have seamlessly blended to create a truly unique nation. From the colors of the national flag to the cuisine, Guyana is more culturally Caribbean than South American.
