The United States occupation of Veracruz (April 21 to November 23, 1914) began with the Battle of Veracruz and lasted for seven months, as a response to the Tampico Affair of April 9, 1914. The incident came in the midst of poor diplomatic relations between Mexico and the United States, and was related to the ongoing Mexican Revolution. On April 21, Mexicans celebrate Heroic Defense of Veracruz (Heroica Defensa de Veracruz). The day commemorates the defence of the city of Veracruz against the United States occupation in 1914.
In the year 2014, Mexico issued a 20 peso coin to commemorate the Centenary of Heroic Defense of Veracruz.
