The Kurds have a unique and difficult history in the Middle East. Kurds make up about 10% of the population in Syria, 19% of the population of Turkey, 15-20% of the population of Iraq and are the second largest ethnicity in Iran. Baghdad Liberation Day is an official holiday observed in the autonomous Kurdistan Region in Iraq on April 9th. This regional holiday marks the anniversary of the overthrow the former regime and the removal of Saddam Hussein's rule from power on this day in 2003. The Kurds are often referred to as one of the largest ethnic groups in the world with no state of their own.
