Dates - Actually, it's quite simple: The Cathedral Fair begins on the Saturday before the first Monday in June. Unless that Monday is Pentecost, in which case the start is postponed by a week.
The Verden Cathedral Fair is one of the oldest folk festivals in Northern Germany and has a fascinating history dating back to 985. Originally, it was a free market where outside traders could also offer their wares. Today, it is a large folk festival that transforms the entire Verden city center into a lively celebration.
A special highlight is the so-called "Pöttcher Market," where household goods and small items are sold – a relic of the original market tradition. The Cathedral Fair is often referred to as the "fifth season" of Verden due to its great significance for the locals.
Another unique feature is the ceremonial conclusion: On the last day, the Cathedral Fair is symbolically "buried," demonstrating the special connection the people of Verden have with this festival.
