Today, the Worms Backfischfest is one of the largest wine festivals in Germany and attracts up to 700,000 visitors every year. The centerpiece of the festival is of course the Backfisch, a deep-fried white fish that is traditionally served with potato salad and Riesling.
The Worms Backfischfest was first celebrated in 1933. It was originally a festival organized by the fishermen's guild to celebrate the catch of the first fried fish in the Rhine. Over the years, however, the festival developed into a popular festival attended by people from all over the region and beyond. The Kisselswiese, where the festival takes place, offers space for numerous fairground rides, stalls and stages.
A parade with historical groups and bands takes place on the first Sunday of the festival. Musical offerings: Live performances by bands and musicians take place on various stages throughout the festival.
The diverse culinary offerings: In addition to fried fish, there are of course many other culinary specialties from the region and around the world.
