The HanseStadtFest "Bunter Hering" has a long tradition. It has been held annually on the second weekend in July since 2003 and has developed into one of the largest public festivals in East Brandenburg. The name of the festival goes back to an old legend. According to the legend, a ship loaded with herrings capsized on the Oder in 1503. The citizens of Frankfurt salvaged the cargo and celebrated the rescue with a festival. Since then, the "colorful herring" has been the symbol of the city festival.
