The Dynamite Ska Festival takes place in Leipzig and is known for its diverse selection of ska bands from different eras and countries. Highlights include performances by legendary Jamaican artists as well as bands from the third ska wave. The festival's history spans many years, during which it has developed into a popular meeting place for ska fans.
The Dynamite Ska Festival, a cornerstone of the German ska scene, has its roots in 1997, when Franz Vogel and Jörg Folta founded the "This Is Ska" festival. The first forerunners of Dynamite took place in 2001 and 2002 in Leipzig's Baumwollspinnerei. Officially under the name "Dynamite Ska Festival", it debuted in 2003 and marked the triumphant return of "El Bosso & die Ping-Pongs", pioneers of German ska who had disbanded in 1992. With a capacity of 1,500 visitors, the festival was quickly sold out, while a further 500 fans stood in front of closed doors. While in 2004 Dynamite was still present with two events a year, one in March and one in November, both at Werk 2 in Leipzig, the following year there was only one festival in December. Since 2006, the festival has finally settled on November. The festival moved into the time-honored halls of the Felsenkeller for the first time in 2010.
