This world-famous Christmas market takes place during Advent.
The Striezelmarkt Dresden is one of the oldest and most famous Christmas markets in the world. The Striezelmarkt was founded in 1434 as a one-day market and celebrated its 585th anniversary in 2019. Originally, it was a market that allowed the citizens of Dresden to sell meat for Christmas dinner after the traditional Advent fasting period.
The Striezelmarkt takes place on Dresden's Altmarkt square. The market attracts visitors with superlatives such as the world's largest 14.61-metre-high Erzgebirge step pyramid and what is probably the world's largest walk-in candle arch. There is also a daily Christmas cultural program for young and old.
The name "Striezelmarkt" comes from "Strüzel" or "Stroczel", the name of a cake that was sold at the market. Today it is known as "Stollen" or "Christstollen".
Please note that due to the increased volume of traffic and traffic restrictions in the city center during the Striezelmarkt, it is recommended that you travel by public transport.
