The Emmes in Saarlouis is a public festival that has been held at the end of the "Saarlouis Week" since 1967. Various events take place throughout the festival week, such as district festivals, exhibitions, a children's, youth and environmental day and the day of emergency services.
The highlight of the week - the Emmes - officially starts on the Thursday before the first Sunday in June at 6.00 pm with the tapping of the barrel.
In various southern German, Lorraine and Alsatian dialects, the Emmes, Immes, Ims or Imbs refers to a snack, a banquet or a funeral feast. In Saarland dialect, it refers to a celebration, usually with a hot meal and a snack (usually afternoon coffee), at which the village community participates in some way or pays a visit. Examples are fairs, weddings, (golden) communions, round birthdays and funeral receptions.
