The first written documentation about the market dates back to 1728.

A festival like this can probably only be found in Frankfurt: under the motto "Literature as a folk festival", a literary prize worth 20,000 euros is awarded at the start of the Bergen-Enkheim district festival "Berger Markt". On the day before the official start of the "Berger Markt", the new Bergen-Enkheim town writer will be appointed. This prize has existed since 1974, when it was the first of its kind in the German-speaking world. Whoever receives this title is allowed to live in the "An der Oberpforte 4" town writer's cottage free of charge for a year.

The next day, the folk festival is officially opened and the cider queen is crowned. Other highlights include the traditional cattle drive and the district cattle show followed by an award ceremony.
