The festival is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Saraswati. During the festival, members of Berlin's Balinese community bring colorful flowers to the temple as an offering to express appreciation and gratitude.
Saraswati (Sanskrit सरस्वती - "rich in water") is the goddess of wisdom, knowledge, art, beauty and eloquence in Hinduism and Buddhism.
In Hinduism, Saraswati is also Brahmacharini, Brahma's helper in the creation of the universe; she performs the marriage of heaven and earth, it is she who creates the heavenly wedding hall - the hall of salvation and eternal bliss. In Buddhism, she is considered the consort of the bodhisattva of wisdom Manjushri. In Japan, she is one of the seven gods of happiness.
