The Bad Wimpfen Christmas market is one of the oldest of its kind in Germany. As early as 1487, Emperor Frederick III granted the then imperial city of Wimpfen the privilege of holding a market before Christmas - the former St. Catherine's Market.
The Dresden Striezelmarkt, the largest of the Christmas markets in Dresden, dates back to a privilege granted by the Saxon Elector Frederick II in 1434, which allowed a one-day free market on the Altmarkt "on the day before Christmas Eve". It is one of the oldest Christmas markets in the German-speaking world and is still held annually on the Altmarkt in Dresden. With around 230 stalls and two and a half million visitors, it is also one of the most visited markets in Germany.
