The festival has been attracting thousands of visitors since 1985. Every year, over 80,000 visitors experience the festival against the romantic backdrop of Philippsruhe Park and Palace in the covered amphitheater. The performances of the Brothers Grimm Festival are lavishly staged and include plays, musicals, concerts and dance performances. The artistic team attaches great importance to originality and also aims to preserve the spirit of the fairy tales. The costumes and stage sets are lovingly designed and transport the audience into a world full of magic and adventure in an instant.
The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, are closely associated with Hanau. The city in southern Hesse is where they were born and where they spent a large part of their childhood and youth. Jacob Grimm was born in Hanau on January 4, 1785, followed by his brother Wilhelm Grimm, who was also born there on February 24, 1786. The brothers attended school here before later moving to Kassel.
The 200th birthday of Jacob Grimm, in 1985, was the occasion for the 1st Brothers Grimm Fairytale Festival.
