Immerse yourself in the cult spectacle of the Erlangen Bergkirchweih, affectionately known as "der Berch" in Franconian. With over a million visitors a year, this folk festival is one of Bavaria's favorites and has been a tradition since 1755. The church consecration of the Altstädter Dreifaltigkeitskirche is celebrated here for twelve days, from the Thursday before Pentecost to the Monday after Trinitatis (the Sunday after Pentecost).
The festival grounds stretch along the slope of the Burgberg on the edge of the city center and become a huge beer garden under old chestnut, oak and lime trees. Characteristic are the numerous old beer cellars where beer was once stored to mature. Today, fifteen cellars, a marquee and the "Altstädter Schießhaus" restaurant serve the beer. Other highlights include an impressive Ferris wheel and adventurous rides. Traditionally, the Berch ends with the "barrel funeral" - the last barrel is symbolically carried to its grave to the tune of "Lili Marleen". Experience the unique atmosphere of this festival!
