Experience the magic of the Allgäu Viehscheid - a traditional alpine celebration that heralds the end of summer when the cattle return to the village from the alpine meadows. Between September 8 and October 3, around thirty villages in the Allgäu celebrate this unique custom on various days.
The festive preparations begin on the mountain pastures, where selected animals, the "Kranzrinder", are decorated with flowers, ribbons, wreaths and giant bells - even a cross and a mirror are incorporated to scare away evil spirits! On the actual feast day, shepherds accompany the herd into the valley. A colorful hustle and bustle awaits them there with a marquee, stalls and fairground booths.
The animals are "divorced" and returned to their owners on the so-called Scheidplatz. Afterwards, shepherds, farmers and visitors celebrate together for the day or even a whole weekend. Don't miss out on the variety of these events, which take place in the weeks from the beginning of September to the beginning of October!
