Diagnostic ultrasound, also called sonography or diagnostic medical sonography, is an imaging method that uses sound waves to produce images of structures within your body. The images can provide valuable information for diagnosing and directing treatment for a variety of diseases and conditions. Ultrasound diagnostics can be carried out at the doctor's prescription or for preventive purposes.
OCTOBER is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month, a globally observed initiative started by the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography in the US to increase awareness of sonography and the role of sonographers.
A sonographer is an allied healthcare professional who specializes in the use of ultrasonic imaging devices to produce diagnostic images, scans, videos or three-dimensional volumes of anatomy and diagnostic data.
Every year on October 29, World Ultrasound Diagnostic Day or World Ultrasound Doctor's Day is celebrated in many countries. For example, in Australia, Ultrasound Specialists Day is on October 27. The Australasian Sonographers Association established the day in 2018, and health departments try to organize it as a day to recognize ultrasound specialists for their important role in the medical community as ultrasound experts.
