Every February 10th Ecuador commemorate the anniversary of what was the first air combat of supersonic aircraft in South America, which allowed Ecuador to initiate peace talks, establishing this date as the "Air Victory of Cenepa" and Combat Aviation Day.
In 1995 country was submerged in a war with the neighboring country of Peru, and that would be the scene on February 10 of the first and so far only air combat of supersonic aircraft between two South American countries. Combat that would end with a victory of the Ecuadorian pilots of Squadron 2112 and their Mirage F1 over Sukhoi 22 aircraft of the FAP.
That day the distinguished officers Major Raul Banderas (leader) and Captain Carlos Uzcategui (wing) piloting the Mirage F1 FAE 807 and FAE 806 respectively and in fulfillment of their duty had their encounter with glory. Since then, the Ecuadorian Air Force pays tribute to these historic events and commemorates every February 10th as "Combat Aviation Day".
