According to the UN, one of the fundamental elements of democracy is respect for human rights, which today are constantly violated.
Since many years ago, Democracy Day has been celebrated in memory of the coup d'état carried out in 1958, when Venezuela rose up and displaced a great dictator. Allowing us to be aware of our many struggles for democracy, although currently this is hindered by the current situation of the country with the constant violations of our rights, which prevent us from being able to exercise freely and properly the democratic system.
In 1958, on a day like today, Marcos Pérez Jiménez was overthrown by means of a civic-military movement driven by the national discontent regarding his system of government, being forced to resign and retire to the Dominican Republic on board the presidential plane, better known as "La Vaca Sagrada" (The Sacred Cow).
A Provisional Government Junta presided by Wolfang Larrazábal was established during the restoration of democracy in Venezuela. Freeing political prisoners, extending the Patriotic Junta, ratifying Fabricio Ojeda in the presidency, and calling votes for the end of that year.
