On the night of January 16, the city of Jaén in Andalusia celebrates the Flames of San Antón, a Festival of National Interest for Tourism. Around twenty bonfires are lit, featuring figures made of old clothes filled with straw and sawdust. Firecrackers explode when the fire reaches them. People dance, sing folk songs, and enjoy roasted pumpkin, popcorn, sausages, and wine. This festival dates back to the 13th century and is associated with tending olive groves. The bonfires were used to burn olive tree twigs and old esparto baskets soaked in oil. The event includes a public race of 4 or 9 kilometers through the city adorned with Christmas lights.
