The traditional Finnish Christmas begins on Christmas Eve, at noon, with the reading of the Declaration from a scroll from the year 1827.
Although this declaration is made in many different parts of Finland, the original and most widely followed one is made on the Kauppatori (market square) in the city of Turku, on the balcony of the "Brinkkala" building.
The reading begins after the ringing of the bells of Turku Cathedral, which date back to the 14th century, and after the blowing of trumpets the declaration begins. The city's chief of protocol is in charge of the reading, which is followed by the blowing of trumpets and singing.
The original parchment was burned during the Turku fire of 1827, and its text was restored - as it could be, since something was lost forever in time - from the memory of another Finnish official. The declaration is read in the two official languages of Finland, Finnish and Swedish.
