Andalusian Gypsy Day became official on October 30, 1996 when the Andalusian Parliament approved an Institutional Declaration referring to this commemoration. Since 1994 several gypsy associations have been organizing events to celebrate the arrival of the first groups of gypsies in Andalusia.
On November 22, 1462, the first groups of gypsies arrived in Andalusia, specifically in Jaén. This event is recorded in the Acts of the Constable Miguel Lucas de Iranzo, governor of Jaén and the first Andalusian who, according to documented sources, welcomed members of the Gypsy People.
