The Virgin of Candelaria or Our Lady of Candelaria is a Marian invocation of the Catholic religion that has its origin in Tenerife (Spain). Its etymology derives from candelero or candle that refers to light: the holy light that guides towards the good path and redemption and enlivens faith in God. Its feast is celebrated, according to the liturgical calendar, on February 2, and it commemorates the presentation of Jesus in the Temple of Jerusalem after his birth and the purification of Mary.
Previously Christmas ended on this day being the 40th day, since by the norms of the liturgical year it was decided to shorten Christmas to the Sunday following January 6 known as the Baptism of Jesus, ranging between January 9 and 13, or the Monday following January 7, ranging between January 8 and 9. During the pontificate of John Paul II, the Christmas decorations remained until February 2, then in the pontificate of Benedict XVI the decorations were left until the Baptism of Jesus, according to the norms of the Liturgical Year and for being Ordinary Time.
Tenerife (Canary Islands): Anniversary of the Canonical Coronation of Our Lady of Candelaria (Patroness of the Canary Islands), canonically crowned on October 13, 1889.
